I have found a place worse than CL to try to sell something.

It is Facebook. Because there the idiots can comment directly with or without intent to buy.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m putting my 1986 200X out there to help offset the cost of restoring my two 350X’ this winter. I have it up a tad high but it’s best offer or trade as anything else I sell.

I get that one guy. Actual quote.. “Not a chance. I sold a 87 in better shape for $1300".

Here’s an 87 200X.

Kinja'd!!!

Outside of the stickers they’re the exact same machine. The 1987 has rarity on it’s side. Only 3500 or so produced.

But because of that prices vary wildly. Mint examples sell from $2000 up to $5000 depending on the area.

It’s not my fault this guy needed a 30 rack of Busch and car payment money so bad he sold a rare machine on the cheap.

Man, I miss the days of hunting Newspapers and the Tradin Times so much.

(Oh Kinja.. I love you so.)

I’m not having much fun with CL. I don’t even want to try FB

CL has become a pain. Mostly the scam posts though. At least nobody texts, calls or emails that they sold something similar for less.

If anything the seller or “buyer” just disappears.

Oh no, Facebook is MUUUUCH better.

A guy was trying to sell his (admittedly rather clean) 1989 E-class for $30k.

It had 160,000 miles. Nothing better than getting someone to rage publicly.

“will you sell just the wheels for 10?”
“swap for Samsung Galaxy no box never used no charger+ cash my way?”

Still beats. “ Mine was rarer, in better shape and I sold it for less. Oh, I have no proof”.

That’s pretty common on buy swap sell pages here.
They’re the last resort of selling stuff online. The absolute dregs.

I can concur with you on this one. I posed my diesel 323 on an enthusiast page in hopes that it would go to a good, loved home. Sure enough the comments come in about how it’s illegal and going to get crushed and no one should buy it. Even though it is 100% legal, legit, inspected, and insured.

Facebook is the worst, so many people want everything for nothing, then openly harass you if they think you’re asking too much.

the buy sell pages in my area are filled with over protective moms who will combo through every local buy sell page to confirm they were first to comment interested even though they didn’t respond with any direct message for two days. They will then shit post about it when they find out I sold the item to an interested buyer who sent me a note and set up a time the day the item was posted.

My craigslist policy has always been “First come first serve unless you put money down.”

Might be worth putting into the post if I ever start selling on facebook.

I typically put a time limit on it. If someone comments interested, I’ll publicly reply back saying no dm - confirmed in “other folder” will take next at X time. But that’s just due to the old ladies getting grumpy af

I had so many no shows this last round of selling, it just wasn’t worth trying to keep them straight on who says they’re coming when....

And what’s the deal with people trying to ask your lowest price or try negotiating before even seeing what you’re selling? If you show up, I might give you a price break. Not before.

I do this when I am lazy about buying something. For instance, right now I want a Futon frame. I don’t need it, like, right now, so I’ll just email my price to anyone that is selling one I like regardless of their price. In the next couple months, someone will accept my price and I get my frame, and it only cost me a couple lazy minutes at work.

If I really want something, I’ll start driving out to people and making offers. Which, honestly, about 60-70 percent of people seem willing to take around 50-70% of their asking price when I show up with cash. I know there is a lot of hate for “lowballers”, but quite frankly, most people on craigslist are just trying to get rid of stuff and barely care about the actual money they are getting.

I completely understand that concept, but I really hate it when I get 5 offers of exactly the same price in the same day, and even worse when they get indignant about me not responding right away because the “need” them tonight.

The worst even yet, is when you can agree on a price that is lower than you want to go, and then they never show up or contact you again. Why bother haggling if you’re not interested in buying?

Yeah, I hear you on the indignant thing. I err on the side of being exceedingly polite at all times. It seems to help a lot. Also, if you’re getting five offers of the same price... I think that’s the market talking.

Selling stuff is hard. Most people have a lot more experience on the buying side, which is why I think they come to selling thinking it’s going to be similar to buying. It is not. Not at all. It is much harder and more stressful.

Polite really does help, as does some level communication beyond “How low you can do it” (An actual text I got last time I listed something, which I didn’t bother to reply to).

Selling stuff is hard, and that’s why I believe so many people will take the 50% off the list price to actually sell something. However, I put the work in; I research prices, see what other similar parts are listed for, thoroughly inspect the pieces I’m selling, and then properly photograph and describe what I’m selling. The buyers should know what they’re getting when they come to look. And even more importantly, I’m willing to wait. Those people offering $200 on a $300 listing aren’t showing me what the market is, they’re the ones hoping I’ll sell cheaply and quickly, and they’re the ones who don’t show up when I did agree to a lower price against my better judgement. The people who really want what I’m selling will show up and will pay closer to what I’m asking or give me a reason why they shouldn’t (I did miss a crack on a set of wheels, and gave the buyer a good price because of it).

Sounds like we’re really similar. I am a patient seller who takes thorough pictures, highlights issues, and tries to explain the condition of my product as exactly as I can manage. I always list out every function along with a brief description of how this particular example is functioning. Then I price things fairly. I nearly always get my ask within a week or two.

But we’re the exception. Most people’s highest effort seems to be digging through their phone for 3-5 images they took half a year ago, writing a 2-5 sentence ad, and setting an asking price 20% higher than they could possibly hope for. Oh, and then being generally unavailable and uncommunicative.

I joined this group looking for a beater so my wife could drive Meepster:

NC/SC Cars only for sale

Now all I do is read comments on the horrible lowered/stanced/lifted vehicles that are listed on the page.
